Swine Flu and You: Staying Safe & Healthy this winter! ![]()
New Zealand's swine flu epidemic is escalating rapidly, reaching three figures overnight.
A Canterbury man became the South Island's first confirmed case after returning from Los Angeles on Air New Zealand flight NZ5 on May 31.His seven-year-old son has tested positive for the H1N1 virus as did a second passenger from the flight.
Several schools have been temporarily closed or had groups sent home, health officials fear unwell Christchurch churchgoers breached home isolation, the Police College in Porirua has postponed new courses. Thirteen new cases confirmed in Canterbury, brought the national total of confirmed cases to 100. On Friday 12th June the count was 35.
Travelling, which has become part and parcel of modern lifestyles, heightens the spread of the virus, making its prevalence difficult to control.
Though called swine flu, the H1N1 virus is the result of mutation of the North American avian flu infecting European and Asian pigs to become humanly communicable. That is how this intercontinental mix differs from the 20th century swine flu that killed between 20 and 50 million people worldwide.

Australia has reported 1006 confirmed cases.Victoria has 874 cases (more than 85% of Australia's confirmed cases.) All Australian states and territories now have at least one confirmed case. Other Australian states ordered children returning from flu hotspot Victoria to be quarantined, earning the wrath of Melbourne officials.
"Normally we'd probably see about 31,000 medical admissions a month into our hospitals during the winter season. Officials think that we could end up with another 4000 or so, the swine flu peak matches the winter peak, and that is why we are working assiduously to try and prevent that from happening." Health Minister Tony Ryall told Radio New Zealand. While swine flu has so far proved mild there are major fears a second wave of a more serious strain of the swine flu could hit, and this may be sooner than we think!
Since it is difficult to suppress the transmission of the fast-spreading virus, we are left with no other alternative than to arm ourselves with robust immune systems to stave off the virus or to fight it effectively should we contract it. BodyGuard can help you 'guard' against the flu this winter.
