SeleniumXL - The Formula

Selenium Chelate.

Selenium is a trace mineral needed in the body in small amounts, about 200mcg per day. No other trace mineral is so vital to our antioxidant defenses and if it is deficient then an important enzyme pathway is blocked and body disfunction can occur. Selenium, along with Vitamin E, is involved in producing the enzyme, glutathionine peroxidase.

Years ago, the trace mineral selenium was found to be very low in New Zealand soils and therefore in our diets. Recently a renaissance in selenium research has found low selenium levels to be a significant risk for several degenerative diseases. In fact, research show that people with low levels of selenium have a 70% greater risk of coronary heart disease and similarly with cancer.

Selenium is a powerful enzyme that acts like a ‘mop' in neutralising damaging particles to the body. These particles are commonly known as free radicals. Selenium is also necessary for the production of prostaglandin's, substances that affect blood pressure. A prostaglandin deficiency also results in a deficiency of other compounds necessary for keeping the arteries free from platelet aggregation. Pancreatic function also depends upon selenium.

Selenium may also be beneficial for the following ailments: hypertension, stroke, Cystic fibrosis, arthritis, muscular dystrophy, infertility, cancer, circulatory disease and cot death, protect from hardening arteries, heart disease, rheumatoid arthritis, cataracts, hepatitis, herpes and even infections by the Ebola virus.

Selenium has been shown to improve the production of sperm and sperm motility and can increase sperm count in males - research that has found a selenium containing protein - phospholipid hydroperoxide glutathione peroxidase in healthy sperm cells. Seems that selenium is critical in protecting developing sperm from free radical damage. The consequence of not having enough selenium is the sperm break apart. This can lead to low counts and infertility.

Because selenium preserves tissue elasticity, a deficiency of selenium may lead to premature aging, or liver damage. There is also evidence suggesting prolonged selenium deficiency may produce cataracts.

Lack of selenium may lead to changes in fingernails, muscle weakness, and heart problems.

Good sources of selenium include fish, shellfish, red meat, grains, eggs, chicken, liver, and garlic, Brewer's yeast and wheat germ.  The amount of selenium in fruit and vegetables is dependent on the selenium content of the soil.

Selenium
Selenium is deficient in many New Zealand soils.  It is a vital antioxidant especially when combined with vitamin E.  It protects the formation of free radicals which can damage the body.  Selenium and vitamin E act synergistically to aid the production of antibodies and help to maintain a healthy heart.  It is needed for pancreatic function and tissue elasticity.  A deficiency is linked to cancer and heart disease.

Vitamin A
Vitamin A acts as an antioxidant, which helps protect against pollution, cancer and other diseases. It also helps prevent night blindness, other eye problems and some skin disorders such as acne.  It enhances immunity, may heal gastrointestinal ulcers and is needed for skin maintenance and repair.  It is important in the formation of bones and teeth, aids in fat storage and helps slow the aging process.

Vitamin E
Vitamin E improves circulation, repairs tissue, and is useful in treating fibrocystic breast and premenstrual syndrome.  It promotes normal clotting and healing, reduces scarring, reduces blood pressure, aids in leg cramps.  It protects the cell coating around each cell, improves oxygen utilisation and enhances immune response.  The body needs zinc in order to maintain proper levels of vitamin E in the blood.

Zinc Chelate
This essential mineral is important in prostate gland function and the growth of reproduction of organs.  It is required for protein synthesis and collagen formation and promotes a healthy immune system and the healing of wounds.  It allows acuity of taste and smell and protects the liver from chemical damage.  Sufficient intake and absorption of zinc is needed to maintain the proper concentration of vitamin E in the blood.

Vitamin C
Vitamin C is an antioxidant that is required for tissue growth and repair, adrenal gland function and healthy gums.  It aids in the prevention of cancer and enhances immunity.  It may reduce cholesterol levels and high blood pressure and helps prevent arteriosclerosis.  Vitamin C protects against blood clotting and bruising, promotes wound healing and the production of anti-stress hormones, and is essential in collagen formation.  It also aids in interferon production and is needed for the metabolism of folic acid, tyrosine and phenylalanine.  Works synergistically with vitamin E and Selenium – vitamin E scavenges for radicals in the cell membrane, while vitamin C works in the biological fluids.  The body cannot manufacture vitamin C, so it must be obtained through the diet or supplements.

Bioflavinoids
Bioflavinoids enhance the absorption of vitamin C.  The body cannot produce Bioflavinoids, so they must be supplied in the diet or supplements.  They are used extensively in athletic injuries because they relieve pain, bumps and bruises.  They can also reduce pain located in the legs and back.  They act synergistically with vitamin C to protect and presence the structure of capillary blood vessels.  Bioflavinoids also have an antibacterial effect and promote circulation, stimulate bile production, lower cholesterol levels and aid in the treatment and prevention of cataracts.

Vitamin B Complex
The B vitamins help to maintain healthy nerves, skin, eyes, hair, liver, and mouth as well as muscle tone in the gastrointestinal tract.  They act as co-factors for the antioxidants and coenzymes involved in energy production and may be useful for depression or anxiety.  The B vitamins should always be taken as a group.

L-Cysteine
L-Cysteine helps to detoxify harmful toxins, thereby protecting and preserving the cells.  It is a precursor to L-glutathione.  It is one of the best free radical destroyers, especially taken with Selenium and vitamin E.  L-Cysteine is recommended in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.  It has a healing effect which removes excess copper from the body.  It also promotes the burning of fat and building of muscle.  It breaks down mucus thus is helpful in the treatment of bronchitis, emphysema and tuberculosis.

Methionine
Methionine is not synthesised in the body. It is a good source of source of sulphur and is an important aid in the treatment of rheumatic fever and toxaemia resulting from pregnancy.  It assists in the breakdown of fats, preventing the build up of fat in the liver and arteries, which obstructs blood flow to the brain, heart and kidneys.  This amino acid helps the digestive system, interacts with other substances to detoxify harmful agents, aids muscle weakness, helps prevent brittle hair and is beneficial for allergic chemical sensitivities and osteoporosis.

Choline
Choline is needed for nerve transmission, gall bladder regulation and liver function.  It minimises excess fat in the liver, aids in hormone production and is necessary in fat and cholesterol metabolism.  Without Choline, brain function and memory are impaired.  It is beneficial for disorders of the nervous system such as Parkinson’s disease.  A deficiency may result in a fatty build up in the liver.

PABA (Paba-Amino Benzoic Acid)
PABA is one of the basic constituents of folic acid and also helps in the utilisation of pantothenic acid.  This antioxidant helps protect against sunburn and skin cancer, acts as a coenzyme in the breakdown and utilisation of protein and assists in the formation of red blood cells.  Supplementing the diet with PABA may restore hair to its original colour if the greying was caused by stress or a nutritional deficiency.

Inositol
Inositol is vital for hair growth.  It helps prevent hardening of the arteries and is important in lecithin formation and fat and cholesterol metabolism.  It also helps remove fats from the liver.

Arginine
Arginine can cause retardation of tumours and cancer, aids in liver detoxification, assists in the release of growth hormones and maintenance of a healthy immune system, detoxifies ammonia, can increase sperm count in males and aids in kidney disorders and trauma.  This amino acid is needed for protein synthesis and for optimum growth.  An increase in muscle mass and a reduction of body fat occurs in the presence of Arginine.  It also helps increase production of collagen, and is good for liver disorders such as cirrhosis of the liver and fatty liver.

Folic Acid
Considered brain food, folic acid is needed for energy production and formation of red blood cells.  Functioning as a coenzyme in DNA synthesis, it is important for healthy cell division and replication.  It may help depression and anxiety and may be effective in treatment of uterine cervical dysplasia.  It helps regulate embryonic and foetal development of nerve cells, vital for normal growth and development.

Coenzyme Q10
Coenzyme Q10 is a vitamin like substance that resembles vitamin E, but which may be an even more powerful antioxidant. Coenzyme Q10 is found in human tissue.  It declines with age and should be supplemented with diet.  It plays a crucial role in the effectiveness of the immune system and in the aging process.  In Japan, it is used in the treatment of heart disease and high blood pressure with tremendous success.

It benefits allergies, asthma, and respiratory disease and used to treat the brain for anomalies of mental function such as those associated with schizophrenia and Alzheimer’s disease.  It is also beneficial in aging, obesity, candidiasis, multiple sclerosis, periodontal disease and diabetes.  AIDS is a primary target for research on Coenzyme Q10 because of its immense benefits to the immune system.  The use of Coenzyme Q10 is the step forward in the prevention and control of cancer.

Iodine
Iodine is needed only in trace amounts and helps metabolise excess fat and is important in physical and mental development.  Iodine is also needed for a healthy thyroid gland and in the prevention of goitre.  Mental retardation may result from an iodine deficiency in children.  In addition, iodine deficiency has been linked to breast cancer.
