New Zealand - heaven on earth fifty years ago - now a green desert and unnecessary world leader in the incidence of some life-threatening diseases!
In very few decades New Zealand has gone from being the health-wise envy of the world to an unenviable situation! Currently, most New Zealanders only receive half the recommended daily intake (RDI) of antioxidants naturally through foods, compared to other western countries.
Interestingly, New Zealand has an alarmingly high incidence of the many chronic and degenerative diseases which are shown to be linked to low levels of antioxidants in the blood, heart disease and cancer rates being the leading killers.
New Zealand soils have been identified as the main reason our daily intake of these vital antioxidants being extremely low - hard to believe with our clean green International image, BUT here are the facts:
- New Zealand soils are young and are the lowest in the world with regards to Selenium content and other microelements, in particular Zinc, Iodine, Cobalt, and Manganese.
- Agriculturally this problem is exaggerated with the pressure placed on the agricultural industry to perform. Artificial fertilisers are used in bulk to promote the unnatural growth required to feed the livestock. Pesticides are use for crops. Vegetables and fruit are stored away from their natural environment and most often cooked before eaten, thus we are not getting the full vitamin content.
- With the exception of one area in China, the selenium levels in New Zealand's soils and human blood levels are the lowest in the world.
Dr Cliff McGrouther', founder of BodyGuard Health, has a passion to see the world of medicine acknowledge methods used successfully in vetinary medicine to wipe out notable and tragic diseases such as cot death, cancer, cardiovascular disease, asthma, diabetes, muscular dystrophies, arthritis, MS and ME.

Dr McGrouther has targeted the medical profession, the Dairy Industry, and the farmers to help the crusade. "My aim is for the medical profession to place more emphasis on prevention of diseases and thus reduce the need for sticking plaster medicine", he said.
Dr McGrouther is also eager for the Dairy Industry to adopt the increasingly popular theories. When you consider that it took 40 years for a doctor to have iodine added to salt to wipe out the incidence of goiter in New Zealand, it makes you think.
"The Dairy Industry is paying scant attention to human health. For example, butter should have higher levels of Vitamin E because of its management in the home. Every time you melt it in the microwave it loses more Vitamin E."
"All of these problems are worldwide. The evidence gathered over the last 50 years is almost full proof that antioxidants must be used in medicine. The antioxidants all help each other", he said.
